9-Ball Break & Run Strategy: How to Master Pattern Play
To run racks consistently in 9-Ball: 1) Break from 2 inches off the side rail with 14-16 MPH speed; 2) Drive the 1-ball into the side pocket; 3) Control the cue ball to land in the center of the table for key-ball positioning on the 2-ball.
Pattern play is the single differentiator between a 500-rated casual league player and a 700-rated tournament champion.
### Step 1: The High-Percentage 9-Ball Break Position your cue ball 2 to 3 inches away from the side rail on the head string. Aim for a full-face contact on the head ball (the 1-ball).
### Step 2: Cue Ball Center Table Freeze If hit cleanly with 15 MPH break speed, the cue ball will pop slightly and settle in the geometric center of the table, giving you an open shot on the 1-ball anywhere on the felt.
